Graves and Burials

Where this family is buried, gathered from the tree — including two plot references that two different people are both supposed to occupy.

Of the people this archive publishes, 101 have a recorded burial place across 89 cemeteries and gardens. Almost all of it comes from the family tree and almost none of it has been checked against a cemetery register. from the tree, unverified

The thing worth looking at

Two plots, four people

A cemetery plot reference is precise: portion, section, grave number. When the same reference appears against two people it is either quietly true — families did share graves, and routinely — or it is a copy-and-paste error propagated through an online tree. This archive cannot tell which, and says so.

Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane, Queensland (Port. GP5, Sect. 42A, Grave 78)

Martha Blum (1870–1904) · Miriam Wakefield (1840–1909)

Toowong Cemetery, Toowong, Brisbane, Queensland (Port. 4, Sect. 35, Grave 3-4)

Arthur William Hartley Sneyd (1866–1922) · Kenneth Seigfried Sneyd (1898–1935)

The two read very differently. At Toowong, a father and the son who died thirteen years after him — entirely ordinary, and probably true. At Lutwyche, a woman and her son's wife, who died five years before her. Also possible, and much more the sort of thing a records-matcher invents. One email to the Brisbane City Council cemetery register settles both in a minute, and it is now on the list. The queue → · The Lutwyche question →

And 28 the tree does not carry

Burials this archive holds a record for, where no grave above names the person — including John Saniger, Hannah’s father, buried at Berkeley St Mary the Virgin on 16 January 1825. The table above is built from the family tree; these come from registers, indexes and depositions. Until the tree holds them they belong here rather than nowhere, and the list is computed each build, so documenting one more puts it here by itself.

WhoWhat the record saysWhere
Agnies Sainger buried 2_ May 1655 · Berkeley St Mary · entered “wife of” TYLER — NOT a Sainger wife named in a record
Audrey Dell D'Arcy burial · 1 Nov 1929 – 1 Aug 2022, aged 92 · Centenary Memorial Gardens, Brisbane · plot GARDEN OF REFLECTION, Section E, Site 20 · the Audrey “Dell” Murdoch who married Kenneth Lindsay D'Arcy at Toowoomba in 1952 named in a record

David Oliver A CANDIDATE MARRIAGE, AND IT IS CALLED A CANDIDATE · “1772, June 12. DAVID OLIVER OF OSWESTRY P: BAC: & MARY OWENS SP: … lic: mar”, in the printed register of LLANYBLODWEL · WHAT FITS: he is of Oswestry parish, where the Oliver baptisms are; the forename pair matches the “David Oliver & Mary” of those baptisms; a marriage in 1772 sits properly before Dianna in 1777, Elizabeth in 1782 and David in 1789; and a man buried at Oswestry in 1808 aged 59 was about twenty-three in 1772 · WHAT DOES NOT: NOTHING LINKS THIS ENTRY TO THOSE BAPTISMS EXCEPT THOSE FITS. David Oliver and Mary are two of the commonest names on this border, and the same eight volumes hold David Olivers at Blodwell, Trefyrclawdd, Pentreshanel, Sweeney and Willow Street across a century · IF IT IS THE RIGHT MARRIAGE, Elizabeth Margaret Oliver's mother was MARY OWENS and the Sneyd line gains a surname. IT IS NOT YET THE RIGHT MARRIAGE; IT IS THE ONLY CANDIDATE named in a record
